1. Why didn't any of the top Contenders get paid in the 2011 event?
A. When we started planning the 2011 event the tracking devices were not intended to be used as a means of monitoring speeds because they did not provide the speed limits along with the rate of travel. While they could send out an email notification if a rider went over a certain speed, without knowing the speed limits in any given location, and without knowing whether that rider was passing another vehicle at the time, it was decided that it would be an unreliable and unfair option to DQ any rider from the field. So, it was decided that the speed reports would be reviewed during a validation process after the event was concluded. Since the riders had been told that the tracking devices would not be used to DQ them for speeding, it was necessary to call our top contenders in for interviews and polygraph exams. The majority of the contenders admitted to having gone at least 20mph over the speed limit during their interview and the result was that they could not be rewarded with prize money. These 11 riders were however, the only ones who managed to complete this considerable event in the time allotted and are not only the most capable riders in the world but are also some of the most honorable people I have ever known. 2.Why did you change the prize structure this year?
A. As a direct result of having a prize structure that recognized finishing placement, there has been a misconception that the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge was a speed race and this opinion has taken the focus away from what the event was intended to be. The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge was intended to not only test a rider’s stamina and endurance, but their mental capacity to follow directions and adapt to any situation. In fact, the exact length of the routes and the number of participants were withheld for the sole purpose of keeping the riders guessing.
In order to return the event to this original objective, we have removed the incentive for speeding by not offering to recognize finishing placement. The prize money will be fifty percent (50%) of the money brought in through entry fees split equally by all riders that arrive at the finish line within a window of time, having followed the driving directions we provide and having hit all of the checkpoints.
A word of caution though... Riders shouldn't be lulled into a false sense of security by the shorter route. The allotted window of time to be eligible for prizes will be fairly narrow and riders will have to rely on their endurance, navigation skills and wit to reach the finish line in time.

3. Will tracking devices be used again this year?
A. Yes. We will be working with US Fleet Tracking again this year and the cost of your tracking device will be covered as part of your $1,000 entry fee.

4. How will speeding violations be handled this year?
A. This is an additional benefit to our new prize structure... By removing the incentive for riders to speed, the organization will have no need to police your speeds with GPS or polygraph tests! In order to be eligible for a share in the purse, contenders will simply have to certify that they did not receive a ticket for a moving violation during the course of the event.

5. Is the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge limited to Harley's only again in 2012?
A. No, the event will be open to all American made big bore, V-Twin, motorcycles like Harley-Davidson®, Indian® and custom motorcycles.

6. Is the Challenge going through Mexico or Canada this year?
A. No, this year's ride will be completely within the lower 48 states. The route will take you through National Parks and great mountain passes. While we won't be providing much in the way of additional information about the route this year, participants should expect to encounter vast technical riding along back roads and byways with very few 4 lane roads.

7. I would love to participate but don’t think I can take that much time off work. Do I have to ride the entire route?
A. Completing the entire Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge route is only a requirement if you plan to be in contention for the prize money. Most riders plan to participate in this great event just to be a part of the camaraderie and the adventure. If you just can’t get the time off work or physically can’t make the whole ride; just go as far as you are able. Even if you can’t complete the entire route, you will still be recognized as one of the elite Hoka Hey Challengers!

8. Are you going to publish the route this time?
A. No. We won't be providing much in the way of additional information about the route again this year but, participants should expect to encounter vast technical riding and will have to rely on their navigation skills and wit to reach the finish line in time! Riders will need to reach the checkpoints in order to receive their driving directions for the next leg of the journey.

9. Will the bikes be quarantined in Las Vegas before the Challenge?
A. No, we will be inspecting the bikes when you arrive for registration but will not sequester them at any time.

10. Are support teams going to be allowed?
A. No, family and friends may meet you at a checkpoint to provide moral support. But - they may not follow you across the continent and they may not provide mechanical assistance, aid or support.
11. Do riders have to camp near their bike?
A. It is not a requirement that participants should sleep on the ground this year in order to be eligible to win an award. However, in order to keep the spirit of the Challenge, riders should plan to use a tent, lean-to or a hammock during the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge. Challengers with physical disabilities are automatically exempted from this restriction.

12. How will you know if any one cheated during the Challenge?
A. There will be a drug screening and a thorough cross verification of receipts and the vapor trail from their tracking devices.

13. Are we allowed to outfit our bikes with a larger aftermarket tank?
A. Yes, as long as it does not exceed the 6.2 gallon limit. No fuel cells or gas cans will be permitted though.
14. Is a second fuel tank considered to be a fuel cell?
A. For the purposes of the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge a second fuel tank would be considered a fuel cell and would disqualify that bike from participating in the event.
15. Will any of the organizers be participating?
A. Certainly! After all that is why we've organized the Challenge in the first place. We love to ride and look forward to an opportunity to test our own abilities! The catch to this is that the organizers cannot win the money. We may come in first, but someone else will ride away with the cash!

16. Will it matter if I put one bike on the application and then decide to ride another?
A. We just need to have an idea of what to look for on the day of departure. So - if you change your mind after submitting your application - or if you will be renting a motorcycle for the Challenge - just give us a call or submit the change in writing. No problem!

17. Do you have a comprehensive list of rules and how the race is run?
A. Sure! You should be able to find everything you need in the Terms & Conditions. The T&C have been revised in order to address some of the concerns that came out of the first two Challenges so potential riders should read them over carefully before applying.
18. Is there a specified route or do participants have routing flexibility?
A. We will be picking the route and will provide Challengers with driving directions and an overview map. In order to be considered for the prizes, Challengers will be expected to stick to the route even if it means backtracking 100 miles to find a missed turn. There will be established checkpoints and the possibility of a random checkpoint and riders are expected to hit them all if they want to be in contention for the prizes.
19. What types of roads will the route follow?
A. For the most part, the route will follow secondary paved roads. There are very few interstate highways and, since the organizers all ride newer motorcycles, they don't intend to run on any dirt roads except where it absolutely can not be avoided.

20. Your ability to change the rules before the event doesn't seem acceptable...
A. This comment must be referring to the Force Majure or the section entitled "Rules Subject to Change." We certainly don't intend to jerk anybody around and these sections are fairly specific in their reference to matters that are completely beyond our control (fire, earthquake, epidemic diseases, etc.). We have to be able to adjust to unforeseen circumstances but no changes will be made after the Rider’s Meeting which will be held the night before take off.
21. Will trikes or trailers be permitted?
A. Only if you have a medical condition which requires that you haul special equipment. Passengers will also be permitted with a medical waiver.
22. How many riders are you expecting to participate?
A. While we are not limiting the number of participants in this year’s event, we anticipate that since the event is open to more bike manufacturers, because the route is shorter and will be entirely in the US, there is a very good chance that we will reach our goal of 1,000 riders this year.
23. Is there going to be a drug test for the winner?
A. Yes, drug screening will be implemented to discourage the use of amphetamines or methamphetamines during the Challenge.
