Frequently Asked Questions
Its a Good Day To Ride

Q. I don't know which bike I will actually be riding for the event. Will it matter if I put one on the application and then decide to ride the other?
A. We really aren't that particular about what you ride (as long as it is a Harley Davidson). We just need to have an idea of what to look for on race day. So - if you change your mind after submitting your application - or if you will be renting a motorcycle for the Challenge - just give us a call or submit the change in writing. No problem!

Q.  Do you have a comprehensive list of rules and how the race is run, i.e. checkpoints...straight through, etc...?
A. We are trying to keep it simple, so we don't have a big long list of rules.  In a nut shell though - we will be picking the routes and there will be 7 or 8 checkpoints.  Each rider will be issued a stamp book that he/she will have to produce at the checkpoints, the checkpoint attendants will verify rider, motorcycle VIN, and odometer reading before stamping the booklet and permitting the rider to move on.  Riders will not be required to lay over at the checkpoints but are required to get a certain amount of rest (which is yet to be determined) each day.

Q.  Is there a specified route or do you have routing flexibility?
A. Yes, we will be picking the routes and there will be 7 or 8 established checkpoints. But you never know when a Hoka Hey chase vehicle might pull you over, or a when a random checkpoint might appear in the middle of nowhere!

 Q. What types of roads will the routes be following?
A. The organizers of the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge ride 2008 and 2009 H-D motorcycles and don't intend to run on any dirt roads (even in Alaska) except where it absolutely can not be avoided.  So, for the most part, you will be traveling on secondary paved roads.

Q.  Is the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge limited to Harley's?
A. Yes, in order to keep everyone on an even playing field, the Challenge is limited to Harley Davidson, V-Twin, air-cooled motorcycles.

Q.  Do you consider the V-Rod a Harley for this race?
A. Unfortunately, the V-Rod is liquid cooled and will not be permitted in the Challenge.

Q. If it is just limited to American motorcycles do Victory's qualify?
A. No, we are just trying to keep everyone on an even playing field and so, are limiting participation to Harley Davidsons only.

Q. Are you Guys For REAL???
A. We ARE for real and have several businesses (Buffalo Chip Campground, Mark Brodi Motor Sports Designs Inc., Klock Werks Kustom Baggers; to name a few) as well as several Harley dealerships (Black Hills HD - Rapid City, SD; McGuire HD - Walnut Creek, CA; Flaming Gorge HD - Rock Springs, WY; Whites HD - Lebanon, PA; Southern Thunder HD - Horn Lake, MS) that are providing support in one way or another. They all believe that we are real enough!

Q. Am I required to sleep with my bike?
A. Yes, this is one of the rules of engagement.  This Challenge is about endurance, grit and determination. Just you and your bike for 7,000 miles.

Q. For those who complete the run, is there transportation from the Kenai Peninsula down to the lower 48 for the rider and bike?
A. We intend to have trucks there to bring your scooter back as far as Sturgis, SD.  The rider is on his/her own to get back home.

Q. The biggest concern I have is the Force Majure clause in the Terms and Conditions... If you do not recieve 1000 applicants will the ride be cancelled???
A. The section called Force Majure is all about C.Y.A. and our attorneys insisted on it. The section is fairly specific in its reference to matters that are completely beyond our control (fire, earthquake, epidemic diseases, etc.).  Since we actually do have control over the number of applications we receive (by the amount of effort we put in to promotion), we don't have the option to cancel because we don't receive a certain number of applications.

Q. Your ability to change the rules along the way doesn't seem acceptable.  The rider is out a good deal of expense to begin with and then to possibly be jerked off on the way is wrong!  That's not what I call a challenge.
A. This comment must be referring to the Force Majure or the section entitled "Rules Subject to Change." Again, unfortunately we have to cover our own backsides because, unforseen things do happen. We certainly don't intend to jerk anybody off but we have to be able to adjust to circumstances without being held to some rigid rules that some uptight attorney outlined for us. We are a bunch of veterans and it is, after all, the military way to do what is necessary to adapt and overcome.

Q. Will trailers be allowed?
A. No, I'm afraid trailers won't be permitted since part of the challenge is to survive with your wits and resourcefulness.  This is where your endurance will almost certainly be tested.

Q. How many riders are you anticipating to participate?
A. We are limiting the number to 1,000 participants.

Q. Why should I give you a Grand of my hard earned money when that amount would be more than enough to pay for the gasoline to get me there solo?? Because I can use that 1K and save another to match then make the trip at my leisure and enjoy the ride without the rush.
A. If you want to ride it alone, it could be easier and, yes, you can take the trip at your leisure - BUT - what's the challenge in that?

I have come to realize that there are two main groups who will be participating in the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge...

1) Those that want to win the gold.  They will be riding hard and fast for the finish line - so - if you intend to win the $$, I'm afraid you will have to come off with the 1K.

2) The second group are those that just want to ride with 1,000 hard core bikers! As you may have read on our web site, it is a group of veterans that are organizing the Challenge and part of the proceeds from your 1K will be going toward Warrior Weekend (www.warriorweekend.com).  A number of the participants are bikers that want to do a good deed and have a good time.  It's really just a matter of what you want to get out of it.

Q.  Is there going to be a drug test for the winner?
A. Yes, nobody wants to be on the road with a bunch of tweekers so random drug tests will be implemented to keep folks running clean.

Q. Can I, use a nick name given as my entry name?
A. Certainly.  We would still require that you actually register under your given name since we will need it for match your ID for administrative purposes.  However, if you were to appear on TV or as part of a promotion for your sponsors, you could use any name you choose.
